Mexican-American Women-led Organization Targets Texas / Competitive Races For Immigration Inaction After Ohio Political Wins

Mexican-American Women-led Organization Targets Texas / Competitive Races For Immigration Inaction After Ohio Political Wins

Phoenix, AZ -- Somos Independents (SI) is a woman-led organization that encourages Mexican-American Chicanos and Latinos to vote in elections.  We are an organization strictly made of volunteers with several women leaders across the Nation hosting Get Out The Vote drives.  We do not profit from crisis situations, nor do we ask for donations for our activism involvement.  We are American voters.   According to Texas' ValleyCentral.com, Border Patrol agents led a raid at a home just east of Edinburg, Texas.  Investigators found 35 undocumented immigrants from Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala inside the house -- many of which are women and children.
The burgeoning Chicano / Latino population have been counting down the days since the Democratic-led Senate passed legal immigration last year in June of 2013. It has been almost one year and we have noticed our do-nothing House of Representatives led by the GOP stall and prevent fixing the clearly broken immigration system. It is becoming increasingly clear to women voters across out Nation that men such as (R-OH) Speaker John Boehner, (R-VA) Republican Leader Eric Cantor and (R-CA) GOP Whip Kevin McCarthy are stalling. These men have encouraged chaos within our broken immigration system by turning a blind eye and simply not carrying out their federal responsibility to fix what is broken. Immigration is a federal issue and these mostly Anglo and white-haired politicians working for our federal government appear to want to obstruct almost everything our first African-American President has set out to do instead of working in a bipartisan fashion solving tough issues. According to IVN: "The current Congress has an average 9.2 percent approval rating and 84.2 percent disapproval rating. … These numbers point to a grave problem: the House of Representatives is utterly unrepresentative.”

The men leading the Republican Party do not feel or empathize what women voters feel with regard to the pain we feel with regard to watching undocumented women being separated from small children, or hearing about breastfeeding women and babies being detained in freezer cells. As a result of hearing about immigrant women and babies being detained in freezer cells, we began organizing in Ohio and targeted Ohio women leaders and child advocacy organizations. Our Creator heard our cries. And, we were happy to hear Tea Party Republicans lose in states like Ohio when a Tea Party challenger via Matt Lynch lost to Republican Rep. Dave Joyce. We know the State of Ohio is a key state during Presidential elections.
The Republican-led House of Representatives must understand that while they do nothing, women and children advocates are working harder and stronger to get the message out that these men simply do not care about families being separated in our homeland – rather, they appear to be more concerned with war and issues abroad.
It is our intent to help turn Texas purple and more “Independent” in time for 2016 elections, and we believe we can work with the matriarch Tejanas of Texas. Latinos have already surpassed whites in the State of California, and we believe Texas is next.
As a woman-led organization we simply cannot allow women and children to be victimized again and again as is the case in Edingburg, Texas. The do-nothing House gives us no choice but to work toward decreasing their power in 2014 / 2016 even though we warned them of their immigration inaction consequences before 2012 when President Obama was re-elected. Obama won largely because of women and Latino voters.
Shirl Mora James, Civil Rights and Immigration Lawyer states:
"Let us not compound the recent abuse and misery of the victims of the human traffickers east of Edinburg, Texas. The U.S. Government must provide humane treatment of these victims by keeping mothers, fathers, and their children together. These families are just seeking a safer life in the U.S. We must remember, that at one time all non natives were immigrants that did not belong to this continent, these women, men and their children belong to this continent...let them stay in the U.S. with the benefits of the T Visa!"
Carlos Galindo, a National radio political talk show hosts states:
What we saw occur in Edinburg is repeated throughout the United States. Human traffickers exploit women and children as they are held against their will in drop houses, often forced to remain in their underwear to deter the Immigrant from fleeing. The hypocritical labor system currently utilized by our corporations has created an inviting environment that has trapped the Immigrant currently in the U.S. and tempts others to make that treacherous journey across that unforgiving desert. It is high time that this Congress act and tender a reasonable Comprehensive Immigration Reform to the American people."
The religious right are quick to ask for tithes in their churches and rule with the iron fist, yet, they forget what Jesus Christ teaches us with regard to the treatment of our neighbors. In addition, most of the undocumented immigrants have prevented our Nation from going bankrupt because of the competitive labor they have afforded the agricultural industry, the construction industry, the hotel industry, the restaurant industry, etc., while adding jobs in light of the new immigrant entrepreneurial businesses that have been created in our Nation. Undocumented immigrants pays Billion$ into our tax coffers, while bigotry ignores the financial facts.
According to the Tax Lawyer, a paper published by Section of Taxation, American bar Association with the assistance of Georgetown University Law Center, "...each year undocumented immigrants add billions of dollars in sales, excise, property, income, and payroll taxes—including Social Security, Medicare, and unemployment taxes—to federal, state, and local coffers.
The Republican Party used to pride itself on strong national security, however, they do not seem to realize there are immigration scam artists out there who benefit financially from a broken immigration system. Fixing the broken immigration system in our Homeland strengthens our National security and our relationships with other neighboring countries who have a growing GDP.
The time is now...

Somos Independents is a national group of key swing independent registered Independent women voters who support bipartisanship in our government that will help solve tough issues.   We are organizing the growing independent registered voter group by getting out the vote with millenial voters, and we realize college-aged students prefer registering themselves as independents rather than choosing a major political party.  We believe in putting people before Party politics.  Co-founders include a former Republican and a former Democratic voter.

Carlos Galindo National Political Show Host: Mary Rose Wilcox should reject Lydia Hernandez' endorsement of Wilcox for CD 7

POSTED ON
May 06
Update:  Our organization contacted Hernandez campaign and we discovered the political outcry by Quezada campaign was a political stunt.
A sexual orientation question during a political debate is causing Latino / Chicano voters to pay closer attention in Arizona Legislative District 29 with a heavy Mexican-American population and voters.

According to AZ CENTRAL:
During a legislative candidate forum last week, four District 29 House candidates appeared blindsided when the audience questions turned from political issues to their sexual orientation. At one point in the question-and-answer segment, immigrant-rights activist Francisco Mendoza stood and asked the three Democrats and one Republican whether they were gay.
...   Quezada said the question was an attack directed at him by the Hernández campaign. He said some in political and Latino circles have been spreading rumors about his sexual orientation, possibly due to his friendship with Gallardo, D-Phoenix, who recently publicly announced he was gay.
The attack on the LGBT community should not be tolerated.  Many of us have family with gay or lesbian relatives and we believe we should treat gay politicians the way we treat our family members who are gay -- with the same respect we ask for ourselves.
Carlos Galindo is the only political talk show host who conducts his 2 hour national program in both Spanish and in English. His program is listened to in over 20 markets nationwide with a wide audience, particularly with regard to Spanish-speaking immigrants, Latinos and Chicanos.  Galindo facilitated a letter to Mary Rose Wilcox -- a candidate running for AZ CD-7 this afternoon (see below), asking her to distance and separate herself from Lydia Hernandez because Francisco Mendoza is Hernandez's campaign helper who is making sexual orientation a political issue.
Somos Independents (SI) leaders do not believe the LGBT issue is a laughing matter, particularly when Francisco Mendoza has his own 'sexual orientation' issues when he plead guilty to solicitation for prostitution not that long ago.   SI has also asked (D) Catherine Miranda to withdraw her support of Lydia Hernandez because she is currently supporting Hernandez, too.
Galindo writes:
We would like to respectfully request that Mary Rose Wilcox separate herself and reject Lydia Hernandez' endorsement of Wilcox for CD 7. Hernandez has maintained an intimate political, financial and allegedly other type of relationship with a Francisco Mendoza who left his affluent area in Chandler Arizona to commit a crime against women in CD7 and respectively in Mrs. Wilcox's current Board of Supervisor's district, this would also be Legislator Hernandez' current district in which she is seeking election as a state senator.

The prostitute upon which Mr. Mendoza perpetuated his crime is a minority. Mr. Mendoza has not only committed a crime in Mrs. Wilcox's district, but he entered that predominantly minority district with the clear intent to commit a sexual crime. Legislator Hernandez' refusal to repudiate Mr. Mendoza's action when it was brought to her attention shortly after the initial incident some time ago, speaks volumes as to what Mrs. Hernandez is willing to do to hold political office, even at the cost of collateral damage such as that in the Mendoza prostitution matter, a minority woman and a neighborhood left ravaged by sexual predators that facilitate the thriving of the sex for sale and sex slave industry.

It's important to note that after having received irrefutable proof and after I personally sent Lydia Hernandez and others, copies of the police report outlining Mr. Mendoza's lewd behavior which included exposing his penis in public, Legislator Lydia Hernandez (D-LD29) continued to maintain a close relationship with the perpetrator which has included financial support and public appearances at legislative events. Most recently she appeared with Mendoza at a candidate forum in which Mr. Mendoza insulted the candidates by hammering them on their sexual preferences citing catholic values. This from a guy who entered this "Catholic values" district to commit a sexual crime against a minority woman?

We ask that Supervisor Wilcox do the right thing and immediately denounce Hernandez' failure to separate herself from Mendoza and that Mrs. Wilcox reject Hernandez' endorsement of Supervisor Wilcox for CD7.

Realizing the DREAM to Drive in Nebraska By S.A. Mora James, President Nebraska Hispanic Bar Association

Realizing the DREAM to Drive in Nebraska
By S.A. Mora James, President
Nebraska Hispanic Bar Association

Unfortunately, there are still some areas of inequality in our great state. The one inequality that screams for justice is the current denial of drivers’ license for children who are brought to this country as babies and who were raised and educated as U.S. Americans. Many of these same children, who are now young adults, are waiting for the privilege to serve in our Armed Forces and fight for their chosen country. Their patriotism amazes me considering how they are treated as ‘shadow people’ here in Nebraska.

These same children are also known as “DREAMERS.” DREAMER is an acronym for Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors, which was an American legislative proposal, first introduced into the U.S. Senate on August 1, 2001, S.1291 by Dick Durbin and Orrin Hatch and is currently being reviewed by eight U.S. Senators. Optimistically, the DREAMERS’ ‘Inequality before the Law’ issues will be addressed in the federal legislation that eight of our U. S. Senators from both parties, (AKA “The Group of 8”), are developing in their Comprehensive Immigration Reform efforts.

The truth is that DREAMERS/DACA Recipients have legal presence and deferred status based on humanitarian reasons when they receive their work permits and social security numbers. Unfortunately, DREAMERS/DACA Recipients are currently being denied driver’s license unjustly in this State whose motto is ironically, “Equality before the Law.” State leaders who are anti-DREAMERS, apparently are not familiar or do not realize that the DACA is based on humanitarian reasons. Other humanitarian-based programs like DACA are the Violence against Women’s Act, T-Visas, U-Visas and Temporary Protective Status, which are also considered to be in deferred status and have legal presence, and are allowed to obtain drivers’ licenses in Nebraska.

Regrettably, in America today, only Nebraska and Arizona are currently denying drivers’ licenses to DREAMERS/DACA Recipients who have legal presence and deferred status. I sincerely ask you where is the ‘Equality Before the Law’ for these children and young adults in this State called the “Good Life”.

Chicana / Latina Leader Discusses Affirmative Action in California Schools

POSTED ON
April 10

According to USA TODAY:  "The idea of using race to help determine who gets a seat in public colleges has been under fire for decades. Eight states have essentially banned the practice, and a Michigan case pending before the U.S. Supreme Court could prompt others to do the same.  College officials nationwide got a wake-up call last June from the high court, which set a high bar for using race as part of a complex admissions program in Texas. Many observers say the combined weight of the two cases could finally push state universities to find another way to promote diversity."

"All the trends are pointing against the continued use of race in admissions," says Richard Kahlenberg of the Washington

Co-founder of Somos Independents via Shirl Mora James has a significant amount of experience with regard to Civil Rights and Immigration Law.   Shirl writes:

Affirmative Action is a threat to the status quo, in the words of one of my law school classmates (white male), "I am afraid of affirmative action and having the same start-line with you because I'm afraid that you will easily beat to the finish line because you are stronger than me and I know that because you here competing against me and winning, so why would I support an equal playing field?" I replied, what about your daughters, do they deserve an equal playing field? He surprisingly replied, that they too, did not deserve a fair playing field.

Today with the destruction of affirmative action, there is more white students in the top schools that ever before and the blacks and Hispanics are too more educated but by public institutions that are lower ranked.

The deconstruction of affirmative action is a methodical plan by the white supremacists males by the use of the white political and white judiciary institutions to litigate and legislate affirmative action into nonexistence, they don't want an equal playing field because they are afraid to stand on their own two feet within their own white institutions without their white privilege to aid them along the way. Thus, their fear-based reasoning is to deny an equal playing field to all because of their own feelings of inferiority. If they didn't feel inferior, why would they want an additional edge against us?

The same people that don't want immigrants here are the same people that are deconstructing affirmative action state by state methodically.

"Senate Republicans Block DREAM Act for Illegal Immigrants"

by Devin Dwyer and Matthew Jaffe

“Senate Republicans today blocked a controversial immigration measure that would have provided a conditional path to legal residency for hundreds of thousands of young, undocumented immigrants first brought to the U.S. illegally by their parents.

By a vote of 55 to 41, the bill -- the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors, or DREAM Act -- failed to win the 60 votes needed to break a GOP filibuster, even though the measure passed the House last week.”

“Steve King Amendment Passes House To Deport More Dreamers”

by Elise Foley

“The House voted 224-201 on Thursday to end Department of Homeland Security discretion policies that allow it to delay deportations for young, undocumented immigrants and other people deemed low-priority, effectively demanding the government force out Dreamers who came to the United States as children.

The amendment, offered by immigration hawk Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), was approved mostly along party lines. However, three Democrats -- Reps. John Barrow (D-Ga.), Nick Rahall (D-W.V.) and Mike McIntyre (D-N.C.) -- supported the amendment. Six Republicans -- Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.), David Nunes (R-Calif.), Michael Grimm (R-N.Y.), Jeff Denham (R-Calif.), David Valadao (R-Calif.) -- opposed it, while nine members did not vote.”

“House GOP Passes Immigration-Related Bill That Goes After Dreamers”

by Elise Foley

"House Republicans addressed immigration on Wednesday -- sort of -- by passing a bill that would take aim at President Barack Obama's policy that allows young undocumented immigrants to stay in the United States.

The ENFORCE Act, which passed 233 to 181, isn't about immigration exclusively. Instead, it goes after Obama for alleged overreach on a variety of issues, including Obamacare, education and drug laws. The bill would allow Congress to sue the executive branch for allegedly failing to enforce the law, and it could lead to the dismantling of a key policy protecting some undocumented immigrants.

The move was a far cry from the votes on immigration reform that Democrats want, and stood in stark contrast to the immigration principles put forward by House Republican leadership in January. While those guidelines called for young undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children -- often referred to as Dreamers -- to receive eventual citizenship, the bill approved Wednesday could end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy that keeps the same people from being deported."

LINDA VALDEZ / Arizona Republic: Obama can checkmate GOP on immigration

POSTED ON
March 28

By Linda Valdez:

House Dems' discharge petition shows strategic advantage

The House Democrats' effort to force a vote on immigration reform is being dismissed as pure politics. OK. The discharge petition failed to get the needed 218 signatures to force a floor vote on the Senate's immigration bill. That was no surprise.

If the goal was to highlight the GOP's challenges with Latino voters, though, it was a success.

But we didn't need a failed discharge petition to demonstrate the intransigence of House Republicans or the colossal failure of GOP House Speaker John Boehner to move ahead on reform.

This is an issue of huge national importance, but the GOP has let the far right control the game and block progress.

Democrats shouldn't let up on this message.

Despite the slim hope of actually achieving reform, Democrats should continue to play this for political gain. (They need all the help they can get in November.)

Next move: President Obama can suspend deportations of those who would qualify for legal status under the Senate's bipartisan immigration reform bill. He should do it in the name of fairness and traditional family values.

Obama can legitimately claim the moral high ground. Families are being torn apart by the current policies, as demonstrators have been telling us in heartbreaking stories.

Obama also will be energizing the base by playing the kind of daring political chess Democrats expected from him years ago.

Independent Chicano / Latino voters support legal immigration reform!

THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 26, 2014

Statement by the President on Immigration Reform

Last year, Democrats and Republicans in the Senate came together to pass a commonsense bill to fix our broken immigration system – a bill that would grow our economy, shrink our deficits, and reward businesses and workers that play by the rules. But so far, Republicans in the House have refused to allow meaningful immigration reform legislation to even come up for a vote.

That’s why, today, I applaud the efforts of Democrats in the House to give immigration reform the yes-or-no vote it deserves. Like the Senate bill, the House bill would strengthen our borders, modernize our legal immigration system, and keep more families together. It would make sure everyone plays by the same rules by providing a pathway to earned citizenship for those who are living in the shadows. And according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, it would grow our economy and reduce our deficits by $900 billion over the next 20 years.

Immigration reform is the right thing to do for our economy, our security, and our future. A vast majority of the American people agree. The only thing standing in the way is the unwillingness of Republicans in Congress to catch up with the rest of the country. And I want to thank the leaders in Congress who are doing their part to move us forward.

House Dems Will Try to Force Immigration Vote - NBC News

House Dems Will Try to Force Immigration Vote

BY FRANK THORP V

House Democrats will file another 'discharge petition' Wednesday in an effort to force a vote on a bill to overhaul the nation's immigration system.

The move, which would need to obtain 218 signatures, is not expected to succeed (There are currently 199 Democrats in the House). House Democrats will unveil the petition at a Wednesday morning press event on the steps of the Capitol.

House Democrats have filed seven discharge petitions in the 113th Congress, all of which failed to obtain the signatures needed to force a vote on legislation. In the last 30 years, only seven discharge petitions have obtained enough signatures to force a vote.

Earlier this year, Democrats used the tactic to try to bring an extension of unemployment benefits and an increase in the federal minimum wage to the House floor. While those attempts failed, the process itself has been used as a messaging tool to highlight Republican's unwillingness to bring up bills.

In the case of Wednesday's discharge petition, Democrats are attempting to force a vote on HR 15 -- effectively the Senate-passed immigration bill with changes to the language concerning border security. That bill has three Republican co-sponsors: California Reps. David Valadao and Jeff Denham and Florida’s Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

But in the past, Republicans have not bucked their leadership and joined with Democrats to force a vote.
