STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • People fasting in D.C. to protest inaction on immigration reform with path to citizenship
  • "Fast for Families" participants have gone about two weeks surviving only on water
  • Sally Kohn: Strong majority of Americans support reform, Republicans coming around
  • Kohn: But the holdup is House Speaker John Boehner refusing to bring reform to a vote

(CNN) -- In a tent on the lawn just in front of the United States Capitol, immigration reform advocates are entering their second week without food to protest congressional inaction on legislation that would create a road to citizenship for 11 million aspiring Americans.

The core group at the "Fast for Families" has gone 13 days surviving only on water — including Eliseo Medina of the Service Employees International Union, Dae Joong Yoon of the National Korean American Service and Education Consortium and Cristian Avila with the group Mi Familia Vota. They have pledged to continue their fast until immigration reform is enacted by Congress or until doctors tell them their lives are at risk.

Last week, Vice President Joe Biden and Cecilia Muñoz, director of the Domestic Policy Council in the White House, visited the fasters. This week, during a speech in San Francisco about the urgent need for immigration reform, President Obama gave a shout-out to those fasting. The president said, "We hear you. The whole country is with you."

Which is, of course, partially true. The fact is that a strong majority of Americans do indeed support the goals of those fasting and want a comprehensive immigration law that includes a road to citizenship.According to a recent poll from the nonprofit Public Religion Research Institute, at least 73% of Democrats and 60% of Republicans support such a measure. Not only that, but aboutthree-in-four voters in key Republican-represented swing Congressional districts also support immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship.

Eliseo Medina, who is fasting, says he has "a hunger for an end to a system that creates such misery."

So who, exactly, isn't with the fasters? Republican leadership in the House of Representatives. If the immigration reform bill already passed by the Senate were brought for a vote in the House, it would likely pass— because 29 House Republicans have indicated their support, including many from those swing districts and districts with growing Latino communities. Yet Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner refuses to give the bill a vote.

Yeah, you read that correctly — a bill that would bring relief to millions of undocumented immigrant families just in time for the holidays, a bill that a strong majority of voters in both parties support, a bill that everyone from community groups to business groups resoundingly supports, a bill that would actually pass both Houses of Congress and become law despite our historic levels of gridlock — that bill isn't even being brought up for a vote because John Boehner just doesn't want to do it. Such is the sad state of so-called leadership in the Republican Party today.

If you haven't seen the video in which teen activists confront Boehner while he's eating his breakfast at a diner and tell him their stories of how immigrant families are being ripped apart every day in America, it's worth a watch. Boehner says he'll "try to find a way to move a bill forward." But in fact, he has been the one singlehandedly blocking a vote.

So the brave souls in the tent in front of the Capitol continue not to eat. Are they hungry? Sure. But, as Eliseo Medina, a son of Mexican migrant farmworkers, told the Washington Post, "(T)here is a deeper hunger within me, a hunger for an end to a system that creates such misery among those who come here to escape poverty and violence in search of the American dream."

The juxtaposition is powerful. At a diner near the Capitol, you have Boehner casually dumping salt on his plate of food while seeming completely uninterested in the plight of the two teens who are telling him how their families have been torn apart by America's broken immigration policies. In a tent near the Capitol, advocates are literally starving themselves to protest Boehner's callous inaction.

This Thanksgiving, may we remember the story of our nation's founding — not always a simple story for all involved, and certainly not since, but at it essence, a story of people coming to a new land seeking new opportunity.

Second-Class Citizenship Concern: Women-led Hispanic Voter Group Sends Immigration Reform Letter to Ohio Irish and Catholic Community

POSTED ON
November 22

JFK-quote1

“Today, we are belatedly, but resolutely, engaged in ending this condition of national exclusion and shame and abolishing forever the concept of second-class citizenship in the United States” – JFK

Cleveland, OH / Phoenix, AZ – Today marks 50 years since the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas. John Fitzgerald Kennedy, was America’s first Irish-Catholic president and according to the Irish Central, Kennedy’s greatest legacy was proving that the Irish could be American, too. Mexican American Catholics and Latinos remember JFK as the first sitting president of the United States who chose to visit a Hispanic group 50 years ago last night. An avalanche of coverage began when Russell Contrerasunearthed clips and preserved Mexican American / Latino history by writing stories.

A “nativist” movement achieved prominence in the 1840s with their anti-Catholicism that led to mob violence, the burning of Catholic property, and the killing of Catholics. Irish Catholic immigrants were wrongfully blamed for spreading violence and drunkenness. And although Catholics mobilized and gave Kennedy from 75 to 80 percent of their votes. Kennedy was aware the Protestants feared the Pope would be giving orders to a Kennedy White House and said on September 12, 1960, “I am not the Catholic candidate for President. I am the Democratic Party’s candidate for President who also happens to be a Catholic. I do not speak for my Church on public matters – and the Church does not speak for me.” He promised to respect the separation of church and state and not to allow Church officials to dictate public policy to him. Kennedy counterattacked Protest leaders by suggesting that it was bigotry to relegate one-quarter of all Americans to second-class citizenship just because they were Catholic.

50 years later we see that same bigotry continue and President John F. Kennedy’s prophetic concern remains today. There continues to be bigotry to relegate millions of immigrants who are hiding in the shadows of society with their second-class citizenship and it is no surprise to hear millions of those immigrants are Catholic.

But, today there is one man who is preventing progress that could help fix the broken immigration system this year and his name is Speaker John Boehner of Ohio. Oddly enough, the Ohio Rep. Boehner is a member of the Catholic religion and his mother has both German and Irish ancestry. According to a newspaper of Ohio: Ohio’s Irish population numbers one-third the size of Ireland. A stern letter from Cardinal Timothy Dolan to Speaker Boehner with regard to moral urgency on immigration appears to be getting ignored.

On November 13, 2013, Boehner stated he has no intention of ever going to conference on the Senate bill that garnered bipartisan support. The Republican Party introduced their own version of an immigration bill via Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) that grants temporary legal status to undocumented immigrants that also affects the Irish undocumented. Issa’s bill will only provide six years of legal status, a far cry from the Senate bill’s path to permanent citizenship.

Young immigrant advocates approached Speaker Boehner expressing urgency to no avail. Cardinal Dolan sent letter with regard to urgency to no avail. Ohio women and Hispanic voters across the Nation have expressed urgency to no avail. But now we appeal to the Irish community of Ohio to call Speaker Boehner and urge him to pass the bipartisan immigration reform bill recently passed by the Senate. Speaker Boehner is an alumnus of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), and we are concerned with his ties to ALEC in light of their agenda to expand private prison systems and detaining immigrants with an evil idea to keep immigrants as second-class citizens. Immigrants pay into tax coffers yet receive no representation.

Nothing has worked to encourage Speaker Boehner to act. It appears his loyalty to the Republican Party takes precedence before God and fellow man. Therefore, and since Ohio has many Catholics and people of Irish descent, we hope you will call Speaker Boehner’s office and ask him to support the bipartisan immigration reform bill that was passed by the Senate several months ago.

Mexican-American / Latinos are doing all we can to push for legal immigration reform, and we know our population numbers and burgeoning voters will help provide cover for other ethnic immigrant groups to include but not limited to the Irish, Asians, Canadians, Indians and so forth.

Unfortunately, when you call Speaker Boehner’s office, you may receive voice mail. We urge you to leave a voice mail since theRepublican-led House of Representatives chose to take a 10 day Thanksgiving Break and will not resume in Washington until December 2, 2013.

I’ll end with the below penned letter by an Irish and Immigrant Rights Activist:

As a proud Irish American, living in the United States, it saddens me greatly to hear the violent and heartless rhetoric espoused by those running for the opportunity to be the leader of one of the greatest nation in the world. A nation, mind you, built on immigrants.  This country was built on the blood, sweat, tears and bones of those that came here looking for a better life, for themselves and their families.

We are a nation of immigrants, and our history has not always such a proud one.  From the time when the first Europeans landed on these shores, it has been a battle for dominance and resources against the First-Americans and at the newly arrived immigrants. The immigrants that arrived here first, then tried to deny the same opportunity to the immigrants that came later, or to immigrants that they looked down upon already, whether for reasons of culture or religion.

Whatever nativist group sprung up, the Know-Nothings, the Klu Klux Klan, and now their ideological descendants; FAIR, Numbers USA, and ALIPAC, are trying the same old methods to destroy, deter and demean the new group of immigrants. However, our neighbors to the South have been here for quite some time and their history and culture permeates the United State in place names, surnames, food and music.   Remarkably, most of Hispanics have been for hundreds of years and are an integral part of the United States.

When we draw parallels between the Immigrant Irish of the Potato Famine years and the new immigrants from south of the border, we see an amazing similarity in how they are perceived and in the war against them conducted by the nativists.  Both groups are portrayed as sub-human by these hate groups.  Both groups have had religion used against them, both face strict immigration  restrictions on the numbers allowed in, both were considered lower in intelligence and ability than the dominant population, both demonized for the ills and troubles affecting the current population.  Denied jobs, rights, education, accused of being unwilling or unable to learn the dominant language or culture, they are relegated to menial labor and poor working conditions.

But, and there is a big BUT here, they survived and most importantly, they succeeded.  In law, in politics, in religion, in education and in government, they have given us some of our greatest leaders, humanitarians and scientists.  And during all this, the nativist hatred and chatter has sometimes grown loud and strong and sometimes been silenced and relegated to where it belongs – in the outhouse.

The lessons in history surrounding this issue is this: the nativists have always, ultimately, lost. It was true for the past and will be true again for the future.  If the only rhetoric one has, in promoting themselves as a potential leader, is a desire to trample rights so dearly treasured, deny access to those less fortunate, and demonizes an entire race or religion, then that person is not and never will be fit to be a leader.

The future is now. The things we do now, will decide how we are viewed by history. If we give in to those that would advocate violence, deny basic human necessities and think this is what the American people want, we have lost.  I have more faith in America than this. I believe that the truth and what is right will ultimately prevail, it might be a rough road, but both the Irish and the Latino populations have both been down this road before, and what does not destroy us, only made us stronger.  The nativists would do well to remember that fact.

National Women-led Organization Sends Immigration Reform Letter to Ohio Women and Children Advocacy Leaders

Cleveland, OH / Phoenix, AZ -- Approximately 9 months ago, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus told his Party the need for women and Hispanic outreach. Our national group represents both women and Mexican American / Latino key swing independent voters. We are well aware of the Hispanic burgeoning electorate and are armed with the knowledge there are more women voters than men in our Nation. However, there is a pressing issue important to Ohio women that is getting ignored by Ohio Republican Speaker John Boehner, Reps. Bill Johnson and Dave Joyce.

This letter is targeted to women leadership of Ohio because Representatives David Joyce and Bill Johnson of OH-6 and OH-14 are not taking leadership on fixing the broken immigration system this year despite what Ohio voters want. Many of you are advocates from women and or children causes and we are seeking your help to ask the men in charge to step up to the plate. We want to note the League of Women Voters has been very clear in support of a much needed immigration reform.

There are two Republican-held competitive seats in the State of Ohio via (OH-6) Rep. Bill Johnson and (OH-14) Rep.David Joyce according to the Basswood Research Company (a pollster company Republicans rely on):

Voters in these Ohio districts prefer an imperfect immigration solution to no solution. When given a choice between leaving the current immigration system the way it is, and “passing new laws that are not perfect, but do attempt to fix the serious flaws in the current system,” voters choose imperfect solutions over the status quo by a massive 77%-15% margin. That includes 67% of voters who consider themselves “very conservative,” and 72% of registered or affiliated Republicans.”

Senate Bill 1070 – represents another tool for our state to use as we work to solve a crisis we did not create and the federal government has refused to fix …”

Yet, three years later it remains unfixed and Speaker Boehner is to blame. The Senate has made the strong attempt to fix the broken immigration system when a bipartisan immigration bill passed this summer, yet progress has come to a halt with Ohio Speaker John Boehner. Speaker Boehner has control over the House of Representative schedule because the GOP currently owns the majority seats. Even though Brewer attempted with a state immigration law, onJune 25, 2012, a Supreme Court Decision gutted out most of the bill signed because immigration is a federal responsibility and protected under the Supremacy Clause of our United States Constitution.

I repeat, immigration is a federal matter, yet the Republican-controlled House of Representatives and Ohio Speaker Boehner are preventing progress in fixing the clearly broken system that is costing taxpayers millions of dollars. We have asked the Ohio GOP, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus, Representatives John Boehner, David Joyce and Bill Johnson to lead and fix issues that are important to women and Hispanic voters they claim to want to reach out to, and all have expressed no urgency to fix the broken system this year.

Here are reasons why immigration reform is important to us:

Women do not like to hear stories about breastfeeding immigrant women and babies being held in detention freezer cells and being denied basic human rights like decent water and food. Death row inmates receive better treatment than this. As a woman-led organization, we want to make every effort that breastfeeding mothers and treatment of children and babies take top priority in humane treatment by providing warmth, adequate water and food in a timely manner.

Women do not like to see mothers forced apart from their children and detained for working in fast food restaurants, agricultural fields or other jobs Americans do not want to work.

Women do not like to hear about the thousands of children of immigrants in state foster care nationwide because their parents were detained or deported by immigration authorities.

Women do not like to hear about teenagers (DREAM Act students) committing suicide because they feel they have no hope and had strong desire to be a productive member of our American society. Mothers think about our own children and do what we can to encourage hope.

Billions of our American tax payer dollars are being spent on detaining immigrants who get caught for working in agricultural fields, car washes, fast food restaurants and etc. We are well aware the private prison industry would take a huge hit if immigration reform passes – private prison systems who receive government subsidies where millions of our tax payer money is wasted. Millions of our taxpayer dollars are wasted because of lawsuits, and I believe we ought to reconsider private prison systems because the incentive to make more profit dollars seem to outweigh basic and humane treatment of human beings.

But these disturbing stories do not only affect immigrants – they affect American women, too. I am especially disturbed in hearing stories about women in private prisons owned by Corrections Corporation of American refusing Autumn Miller's cries for medical attention. She says the guards gave her a menstrual pad and locked her in a cell. As a result, Miller says in a lawsuit filed in Dallas federal court, on June 14, 2012, “She looked down and watched, in horror, as she delivered baby Gracie into the toilet.” The infant lived for four days and died in her mother’s arms.

According the the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), Speaker Boehner is an  alumnus. The Nation's Hidden History of ALEC and Prison Labor reveal their role in expanding prison systems. According to their report, prison labor for the private sector was legally barred for years, to avoid unfair competition with private companies. But this has changed thanks to the ALEC, its Prison Industries Act, and a little-known federal program known as PIE (thePrison Industries Enhancement Certification Program). An In These Times investigation revealed that ALEC arranged secret meetings between Arizona’s state legislators and CCA to draft what became SB 1070, Arizona’s notorious immigration law, to keep CCA prisons flush with immigrant detainees. ALEC has proven expertly capable of devising endless ways to help private corporations benefit from the country’s massive prison population.

Lack of leadership within pro life organizations may have fueled the culture of death.

According to Americans United for Life, the legal arm of the pro-life movement and the oldest national pro-life organization, received a prestigious Weyrich Award for “Grassroots Organization of the Year” for 2011. Paul Weyrich was the founder and past director of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).

Why is the National Right To Life working in concert with ALEC, when it was ALEC who helped design laws that began anti-Hispanic laws? Laws that put mothers and fathers in jail virtually leaving little babies and children behind? How do pro-life / pro-baby organizations claim to be what they are when they make secret pacts with the devil? The pro-life movement often uses the 14th amendment to further their agenda and many would say it is their crowning jewel, yet these established pro life organizations did nothing when attacks were being made against immigrant birthright citizenship and our 14th amendment.

Pro life leaders and organizations lose credibility when their fingerprints are found on organizations like ALEC who appear to embrace a culture of death, and their pro life efforts targeting Hispanic and women voters in key races will have little merit until they do away with those fingerprints.

We urge you to contact (OH-6) Rep. Bill Johnson and (OH-14) Rep. David Joyce. Remind them of the Conservative-leaning Basswood Poll where the people of Ohio want the broken immigration system fixed in 2013. Tell them we know Speaker Boehner may have sold his soul to ALEC and he doesn't have to worry about his congressional seat the way Johnson and Joyce do.

Best,

Women-led National Group Calls For Speaker Boehner To Fix Broken Immigration System in 2013 As Immigrant Mothers / Babies Are Held in Deep Freezer Cells; Calls for Investigation

POSTED ON
November 19

For Immediate Release

20 November 2013

Women-led Mexican American / Latino National Independent Voter Group Calls For U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder To Investigate Border Agents Holding Mothers and Babies In Deep Freezer Cells; Speaker Boehner Should Allow CIR On Schedule

Phoenix, AZ / Lincoln, NE — Rachael Bale, The Center for Investigative Reporting,  recently wrote about immigrants being held in deep freezers. According to this report, “Las hieleras, or “the freezers,” is how immigrants and some Border Patrol agents refer to the chilly holding cells at many stations along the U.S.-Mexico border. The facilities are used to house recently captured border crossers until they can be transferred to a long-term Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility, returned to their native country or released until their immigration hearing. According to interviews and court documents, many immigrants have been held for days in rooms kept at temperatures so low that men, women and children have developed illnesses associated with the cold, lack of sleep, overcrowding, and inadequate food, water and toilet facilities.”

Babies are being denied basic human care with regard to the border patrol holding immigrants inside deep freezers. The reality is Border Patrol agents are treating humans worse than dogs held at Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s no-kill animal shelter (MASH).

The border patrol ought to remember they are dealing with human beings, and Somos Independents – a woman-led national independent voting group is calling for the Eric Holder, the Attorney General for the United States to conduct an investigation with regard to the treatment of children and babies in detention. As a woman-led organization, we want to make every effort that breastfeeding mothers and treatment of children and babies take top priority in humane treatment by providing warmth, adequate water and food in a timely manner.

Shirl Mora James, President of SOMOS INDEPENDENTS and Civil Rights and Immigration Lawyer statess:

What have we come to where we are treating babies like this? How can we say we are the greatest democracy in the world when we treat people sub-human?

If we had comprehensive immigration reform and strong borders we would not be hearing about the many atrocities we are currently hearing about. It appears the treatment by coyotes are not really different than those by the border patrol when agents put human beings inside deep freezers. This is unconscionable. We don’t even treat people on death row like this.

Republican House Majority Speaker via Rep. John Boehner refuses to put the legal comprehensive immigration reform (CIR) issue on the floor for a vote even though  Rep. Nancy Pelosi says we have the votes that will fix the broken immigration system enhancing our national and economic security with 190 cosponsors on H.R.15 and 29 Republicans vowing support.  Republicans own the House of Representatives and they are in charge of scheduling and have the ability to fix a policy that affects Latin immigrants, children, babies and breastfeeding mothers. Speaker Boehner and Rep. Eric Cantor refuse to put CIR up for vote before the end of 2013, and the Hispanic community will wait and see how the National Right to Life and official pro life leaders from established pro life organization will react to Republicans who claim to be pro life but will not fix issues involving babies and children within a clearly broken immigration system.

Ohio Speaker John Boehner Will Cost Competitive Districts OH-6, OH-14 For Immigration Inaction

POSTED ON
November 15

We have criticized RNC Chairman Reince Priebus for his lack of 2013 urgency on immigration reform that may cost the Republican-led House of Representatives their power come 2014 elections.  We have also criticized Speaker John Boehner, too, of Ohio but where is the Ohio GOP leadership?  What good does it do the Ohio GOP when Matt Borges and Kay Reynolds turn a blind eye to a key opportunity to retain seats in their competitive districts?  According to theWashington Post, history has shown that no Republican has ever been elected to the White House without Ohio.

The Ohio GOP will be on the hook, too, in light of their lack of leadership in supporting and encouraging Speaker Boehner to support immigration reform this year.  If Boehner and the Ohio GOP do not create a public sense of urgency, this could cost a couple of their competitive districts via OH-6 and OH-14, because we will remind women, Hispanic and independent voters how the current immigration system is rated as “very important” by 70% of voters in these Ohio districts, yet, Boehner did not think it was important to him.

How will the Ohio GOP leadership explain to the voters how one of their own via Speaker Boeher could have solved a broken immigration system in 2013 but chose not to?

Looks like the Ohio GOP needs to look at a recent November 2013 memo provided by the Basswood Research regarding NATIONAL GENERAL ELECTION POLL ON IMMIGRATION ISSUES  IN REPUBLICAN-HELD COMPETITIVE CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICTS.

According to the research findings, inaction by GOP in swing districts will more than likely cost them their seats.   Since its founding in 2001,Basswood Research has conducted survey research in every state and in hundreds of congressional districts and local communities. Its founder and principal, Jon Lerner, has been recognized by Roll Call, National Journal, the Washington Post and others as one of the leading Republican pollsters in the nation. Basswood has helped elect more than two dozen U.S. Senators, Members of Congress, and Governors, including leading conservatives such as Senators Tom Coburn, Pat Toomey, and Tim Scott. It has served as pollster for leading conservative advocacy groups such as the Club for Growth. And it has conducted surveys for the national Republican Party committees at the RGA, the NRSC, and the NRCC.

Here is what the memo states:

Methodology

On November 2-3, 2013, Basswood Research conducted a survey of likely general election voters in 20 congressional districts. These districts are widely viewed as the 20 most competitive ones currently held by Republican incumbents. The districts surveyed were: CA-10, CA-21, CO-6, FL-2, FL-10, IA-3, IL-13, IN-2, MI-1, MI-7, MI-11, MN-2, NE-2, NV-3, NY-11, NY-19, NY-23, OH-6, OH-14, PA-8. The survey was conducted by live professional interviewers by telephone. The overall sample size was 1000, with a margin of error of +/- 3.1%, at a 95% confidence interval. Each district contributed 50 interviews to the sample; as such, data in individual districts is much less reliable.

Key Findings

• Voters in key Republican districts are highly dissatisfied with political leadership in Washington across-the-board.

President Obama’s job approval rating is poor, with 41% approving and 58% disapproving. “Democrats in Congress” fare even worse, with 34% approving, and 63% disapproving. But it is “Republicans in Congress” who are in the worst shape in these Republican districts, with 27% approving and 70% disapproving of their job performance.

• Voters in key Republican districts want action on immigration reform.

Fixing the current immigration system is rated as “very important” by 70% of voters in these districts. An additional 23% rate action on immigration reform as “somewhat important.” Only 5% rate immigration reform as either “not very important” or “not at all important.”

• Voters prefer an imperfect immigration solution to no solution.

When given a choice between leaving the current immigration system the way it is, and “passing new laws that are not perfect, but do attempt to fix the serious flaws in the current system,” voters choose imperfect solutions over the status quo by a massive 77%-15% margin. That includes 67% of voters who consider themselves “very conservative,” and 72% of registered or affiliated Republicans.

The major elements of the comprehensive immigration reform proposals being considered in Congress have widespread support in these key Republican districts.

E-Verify: 80% support; 13% oppose

Dream Act: 78% support; 16% oppose

Earned pathway to citizenship for undocumented: 71% support; 21% oppose

Increasing fines for employers who hire 72% support; 23% oppose

Undocumented immigrants:

Increasing border patrol and border fencing: 67% support; 24% oppose

Increasing high tech legal immigration: 62% support; 30% oppose

• The combination of enhanced border security and pathway to citizenship represents a consensus position.

When presented with three options regarding the interconnection between border security to prevent future illegal immigration and citizenship for those who are presently in the country and undocumented, the following responses were found:

17% oppose a pathway to citizenship under all circumstances;

26% favor a pathway to citizenship even without any increase in border security;

50% favor a pathway to citizenship if it also includes substantially increased border security.

76% favor a pathway to citizenship, with or without enhanced border security.

• The partisan composition of these 20 districts favors Republicans.

By party registration/affiliation, respondents in this survey were 39% Republican, 35% Democratic, and 23% Independent. The generic party preference for Congress was +6.7 points Republican.

What does this mean for Mexican American Hispanic Voters and the Latino Community?

It could mean Republicans in the House of Representatives will lose their power and majority seats in 2014 possibly getting a sweeter deal with a combined Democratic-controlled House and Senate.

If Priebus and the Ohio GOP think they can woo women and Hispanic voters in 2014 / 2016 with mere words, they have another think coming because what we see is the GOP ruining a good Thanksgiving / Christmas Season in 2013 — thus making it easy to ruin theirs come November 2014 for making us wait.  Their stalling and delay tactics will remain fresh in our Mexican American minds for the remainder of the 2014 election year.

We have the votes now that will fix the broken immigration system that would only enhance our national and economic security.  According to Rep. Nancy Pelosi, we have the legal comprehensive immigration reform (CIR) votes with 190 cosponsors on H.R.15 and 28 Republicans vowing support.

If Republicans in the House choose to remain stiff-necked despite our “2014″ warning, perhaps a few hearts might be softened as we invite them to attend the Joaquin Luna Jr., Memorial Walk so they can witness firsthand how the broken immigration system directly affects Mexican American and  Latinos across the Nation.  If the GOP continues to ignore their hearts to be softened, we dare them to see this suicide note by a Jesus-believing reglious DREAMer who knew God would not request “papers” in order to be accepted into Heaven. His deep love for God and his fellow man were part of Joaquin’s daily walk.

National Mexican American / Latino Voter Group To GOP Chair Reince Priebus: 2013 Immigration Inaction Will Cost You 2014 Seats in Competitive Districts

POSTED ON

National Mexican American / Latino Voter Group To GOP:  2013 Immigration Inaction Will Cost You 2014 Seats in Competitive Districts

"Let my People go and come out from hiding, they have helped our economy and agricultural industry go from being bankrupt helping keep our food source costs down. Give them a sense of dignity."

Phoenix, AZ -- Somos Independents is a national group of key swing registered independent voters led by Mexican American women.  The Republican Party suffers with both women and Hispanic voters and their inaction on immigration reform will cost them 2014 seats in Republican competitive districts.  We have no choice but to micro target seats widely viewed as the 20 most competitive ones currently held by Republican incumbents. The districts surveyed were: CA-10, CA-21, CO-6, FL-2, FL-10, IA-3, IL-13, IN-2, MI-1, MI-7, MI-11, MN-2, NE-2, NV-3, NY-11, NY-19, NY-23, OH-6, OH-14, PA-8.

In addition to the 20 seats our women led group will target, our voter group will continue to target high Hispanic populated areas including top 20 states with significant Latino growth and population shifts. We are tired of the lip service we receive from RNC Chairman Reince Priebus who signals to the media a 14 month delay showing his lack of urgency

The Republican Majority House Leader John Boehner (one of the highest paid government officials getting paid almost a quarter of a million dollars per year with our tax dollars) adjusted the House of Representatives schedule cutting Congressional working days in 2013 and giving themselves extended breaks. We will remind American voters how the Republican-led House of Representatives chose to ignore fixing the broken immigration system that enhances our National Security.  If a National tragic event occurs while the GOP-led House of Representatives enjoy their extended Holiday breaks, we will tie that event like a millstone to their necks because we warned them and they are the ones who control the House schedule.  Americans pay over $75 million per year in order to fund 435 House of Representatives and there is no reason why the GOP should ignore National Security measures in our Homeland right now as we see them still bickering on issues "abroad" involving Benghazi, Syria and Iran.

We have warned Speaker John Boehner of immigration scam artists out there who benefit financially from a broken immigration system and who want to bring back all 1.7 million immigrants who have already been deported to include dangerous and real criminals.  The Mexican American / Chicano  community has demonstrated our loyalty and patriotism for our Nation in reporting these pseudo immigration activists who ask for donations to conduct "legal coyote" work by reporting these concerns to the FBI, the DHS and the DOJ. The immigration issue is a federal matter that must be solved by Congress, and our community is not in favor of bringing back the real dangerous criminal element. We will always support good immigrants who aspire to be Americans that can only contribute to our economy paving the way for new tax payers we will need to take care of our aging white population with regard to the burgeoning social security government benefits they depend on.    As such, Republicans have an opportunity to help eliminate those who profit and benefit from a broken immigration system in the name of National and Economic security.

According to Rep. Nancy Pelosi, we have the legal comprehensive immigration reform (CIR) votes with 190 cosponsors on H.R.15 and 28 Republicans vowing support. We know we have the votes in support of CIR now, but the GOP chooses to remain stubborn like the Pharaoh of Egypt despite our several warnings to their leaders.   When the GOP refused to support the DREAM Act in 2010, Mexican American / Latinos warned them of the 2012 consequences.  When the GOP refused to support an emergency Joaquin Luna Jr. DREAM Act in 2011 in light of a DREAMer losing hope and committed suicide the day after Thanksgiving Day on November 25, 2011, it gave us fuel and a reminder to not support and give the GOP an incentive during the November 2012 elections.

Now here we are today, in 2013 warning the GOP yet again that if they do not fix the broken immigration system in 2013, we will vow to ensure they lose power they are currently enjoying in the House of Representatives come 2014 that may end up giving us a sweeter CIR deal.  Make no mistake, inaction and lack of urgency in 2013 with regard to immigration reform will remain fresh in our Mexican American / Latino minds during the 2014 election year.  The GOP might believe it is on an upward swing with regard to the Hispanic vote in light of the Governor Chris Christie win, however, we know that Anglos make the mistake of lumping Spanish-speaking Latinos in one big pile.  For instance, it is disingenuous to believe the son of Cuban immigrant Senator Ted Cruz has agency to speak on behalf of the Mexican American voters who represent almost 70% of the entire Latino population pie.

Carlos Galindo is the first Mexican American nationally syndicated political talk show host conducting his radio program in both Spanish and in English.  He is expanding his audience in more key markets expressing his patriotic and pro immigrant views that helps our hurting community.  On the heels of Speaker Boehner Ruling Out Negotiations on Immigration, Carlos Galindo tells his audience the consequences of Republican Majority Leader Boehner turning his back on the Latino community.

Our demographics and the arc of justice bend in our favor, and with the internet age we live , the GOP can no longer insult our intelligence with false perceptions. We know and understand what is going on. With approximately 500,000 new coming of age Latin voters per year, it would be wise for the GOP to take care of business before they go on their Christmas or Holiday break.

If Republicans in the House choose to remain stiff-necked despite our "2014" warning, perhaps a few hearts might be softened as we invite them to attend the Joaquin Luna Jr., Memorial Walk in Texas so they can witness firsthand how the broken immigration system directly affects Mexican American and  Latinos across the Nation.  If the GOP continues to ignore their hearts to be softened, we dare them to see this suicide note by a Jesus-believing reglious DREAMer who knew God would not request "papers" in order to be accepted into Heaven - his deep love for God and his fellow man were part of Joaquin's daily walk.

RNC Reince Priebus Didn’t Get November 2013 Basswood Research Immigration Poll Memo

POSTED ON
November 14

No Immigration Vote in 2013 Spells Trouble for the GOP in 2014 regarding rising Hispanic voters.

No Immigration Vote in 2013 Spells Trouble for the GOP in 2014 regarding rising Hispanic voters.

Looks like RNC Chairman Reince Priebus and Speaker Boehner didn’t get the memo regarding NATIONAL GENERAL ELECTION POLL ON IMMIGRATION ISSUES  IN REPUBLICAN-HELD COMPETITIVE CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICTS.

17% oppose a pathway to citizenship under all circumstances;

26% favor a pathway to citizenship even without any increase in border security;

If Priebus thinks he can woo the Hispanic voters in 2014 / 2016 with mere words, he’s got another think coming because what we see is the GOP ruining a good Thanksgiving / Christmas Season in 2013 — thus making it easy to ruin theirs come November 2014 for making us wait because their stalling and delay tactics will remain fresh in our Mexican American minds for the remainder of the 2014 election year.

We have the votes now that will fix the broken immigration system that would only enhance our national and economic security.  According to Rep. Nancy Pelosi, we have the legal comprehensive immigration reform (CIR) votes with 190 cosponsors on H.R.15 and 28 Republicans vowing support.

Swing Independent Voter Group Led By Mexican Americans Invite Rep. John Boehner To Joaquin Luna Jr. Memorial Walk To Witness Broken Immigration System

POSTED ON
November 13

Had we received more Republican bipartisan support during the 2010 DREAM Act vote, we would not have to write about a tragic story.  On the day after Thanksgiving in 2011, Joaquin Luna Jr., a DREAM Act student took his life because he felt he had no hope, and days after the tragedy we asked Congress to pass an emergency DREAM Act to prevent more kids from doing the same.  Republicans ignored us in 2011, which is why Mexican American / Latinos ignored them during the  November 6, 2012, elections.

As we approach the 2 year mark of this suicide tragedy, we find ourselves in the same situation — the immigration system is still broken.   Indeed the Democratic-controlled Senate passed a bipartisan legal comprehensive immigration reform plan via the Gang of Eight, but we see the Republican-controlled House of Representatives via House Leader John Boehner stalling on the issue that would enhance our National Security.    Arizona Senator John McCain can attest that fixing immigration helps our national security.    The Gang of Eight 2013 Legal immigration reform bill is a major step forward in securing our Nation because only after everyone is registered and documented will we know who is in our Nation and where we can find them.  We know that once we fix the broken immigration system, and once we document all immigrants —  then they can feel safe to help law enforcement agencies to target criminal activity without the fear of deportation when they report suspicious activity to the law enforcement authorities.

There is no reason why issues pertaining to our National Security should be delayed particularly when 435 Representatives in the House of Representatives are receiving an annual rate of $174,000.00.   American citizens and voters have to pay over $75.7 Million per year for the House to do their jobs and solve broken issues, and our intelligence is insulted when Congress seeks to decrease working days for the rest of the 2013 year.  Americans have had to endure the government shutdown, partisanship, infighting with regard to the Affordable Care Act, Syria, Iran, budget talks and etc. while watching the Republican-led House sink in the polls.

Since Speaker Boehner is stubborn against fixing the broken immigration system this year as he attempts to decrease his 2013 working days for himself and other Republicans, we want to remind him of the Thanksgiving 2 year anniversary since Joaquin Luna Jr., took his life because he felt he had no hope.  Can the Republicans who call themselves Christian again ignore a reasonable request?

It would be wise for the Republican Party to solve immigration instead of waiting until 2014 in light of off-year elections because ignoring us in 2013 will cause us to ignore the GOP in 2014 when they come to “Hispanics and Latinos” for vote support.  The 2012 elections ought to serve as a reminder of how strong our memories are, and we will not forget 2013 immigration sins come 2014.

We invite the majority House Speaker John Boehner to attend the Joaquin Luna Jr., Memorial Walk in Texas so he can witness firsthand how the broken immigration system directly affects Mexican American and  Latinos across the Nation.

A letter from a surviving member to Rep. John Boehner and Republican Representatives who are trying to prevent CIR from passing this year.

Nov. 7, 2013

Letter to Republican Representatives

It’s going on two years this month, that my brother Joaquín Luna, Jr. took his own life due to him having no hope of becoming a Civil Engineer like he always hoped he could be in this country. So, he chose to be with our Lord Jesús Cristo where in heaven you don’t need to have any sorts of documents to be accepted, just your faith.

It’s so hard to accept that the people we voted for to represent our country is so narrow minded, so cold-hearted that you all can’t put yourselves in our shoes and see the world as it really is and accept change. Because, these people who undocumented human beings (like you) are suffering. Take your blind folds off and see the potential all this kids have and see how much they have to bring to the table.

Have Faith.

Stop the suffering, and stop the discrimination and give us a chance to prove ourselves. Give us the benefit of the doubt, so we can prove how much (together) we can make this a better place.

You have it in your power to make a humanbeing like my brother Joaquín Luna, Jr. have hope in their Dreams to become a reality and prove to everyone that we are more than undocumented.

Don’t spread more pain and don’t have another child lose hope. Don’t have another mother bury her son, a sister loose her baby brother (which I helped raise) and to this day I can’t stop shedding tears for him.

And may you reading this feel my pain and open your hearts and have faith.

May you rest in peace little brother, Joaquín Luna, Jr.

Thank you,
Nina Hinojosa

Mexican Americans Remember Joaquin Luna Jr With Memorial Walk Signaling 2 Year Anniversary of Thanksgiving Tragedy

POSTED ON
November 13

We are approaching the 2 year anniversary in remembrance of Joaquin Luna Jr.   Joaquin was a Mexican DREAM Act undocumented student who took his life because he felt he had no hope.  Joaquin was waiting for his DREAM to be fulfilled and this talented young man was not able to see it come into fruition.  This bright young man was on a healthy course had these United States Senators voted in support of the DREAM Act in 2010 because Joaquin was accepted into ITT and Texas A&M and University of Texas – Pan American in Edinburg, TX, and had high hopes.

2 years ago, we immediately asked Senators to pass the DREAM Act before they take their 2011 Christmas vacations in light of Joaquin taking his life the day after Thanksgiving Day 2011, and to prevent more of these tragic situations with kids.   Sen. Dick Durbin heard our cry but we knew Republicans would not think this important enough.   They went on their Christmas or Holiday break ignoring us.

Indeed the Mexican American community was angry when we attributed the blood of Joaquin to the mostly Republican politicians who did not support the DREAM Act vote in 2010 .   55 Democratic Senators voted in support of it with only 3 Republican Senators and 2 Independents helping.  However, a whopping 36 Republican Senators voted against the DREAM Act with 5 Democrats helping them. The House vote consisted of 208 Democratic and only 8 Republican Representatives supporting the DREAM Act of 2010, while a whopping 160 Republicans voted against it with 38 Democrats helping them.   It was now our turn to ignore supporting the Republican Party when the consequence of their "no vote" was delivered to the Republican Party on November 6, 2012.  The Obama win was fueled by Mexican American / Latino muscle.  In fact, shortly after November 2012 elections, McCain tweeted the need for comprehensive immigration reform

A special event will take place in Texas in remembrance of Joaquin Luna Jr. which will begin with a memorial walk using Luna's Dream T-Shirts, and we will end the walk at his final resting place.  Pastor Bustos will lead us in prayer a few words from Luna Lerma family, and DeeDee Garcia Blase of Somos Independents  and Tania Chávez of LUPE will be speakers.

National Mexican American Voter Group Blasts DREAM Activist / NIYA; Cites them as an example for Republicans to fix broken immigration system

POSTED ON
November 05

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Election Day — November 5, 2013,

Communications

National Mexican American Voter Group Blasts DREAM Activist / NIYA and Latino Rebels; We Support Reps. Cuellar and Gutierrez For Kicking Out Pseudo Activists From Office

Phoenix, AZ — Founders of DreamActivist.org via Mohammad Abdollahi and Prerna Lal have no agency or authority to speak on behalf of Mexican American voters.  Somos Independents is a national group of key swing registered independent voters led by Mexican American women.  We believe in voting on the issue — not Party politics. That said, it appears DreamActivist.org and the National Immigrant Youth Alliance (NIYA) are spreading more misinformation with regard to (TX-D) Representative Henry Cuellar and (IL-D) Representative Luis Gutierrez.  Rep. Cuellar was the first to kick out DreamActivist / NIYA pseudo immigrant activists out of his office, and we later learnt Rep. Gutierrez kicked out the same supporter last week.   We applaud the actions of Reps. Cuellar and Gutierrez.

Shirl Mora James, Civil Rights and Immigration lawyer also co-founder of SOMOS INDEPENDENTS formerly Tequila Party states:

DreamActivist.org leaders  and their actions are similar to tea party tactics when it comes to immigration reform because both extremist groups and their actions are hindering the passage of comprehensive immigration reform that will benefit all Americans.”

Co-founders of DreamActivist via Prerna Lal and Mohammad solicit donations. Authorities say no such thing as legal coyote work.

Co-founders of DreamActivist via Prerna Lal and Mohammad solicit donations. Authorities say no such thing as legal coyote work.

Here are the facts:

1) Pseudo immigration activists wanted to kill comprehensive immigration reform and solicited thousands in the name of “legal coyote” work.

2)  One of the lawyers via David Bennion did not discourage the DREAM 9 self deport cause and gave guidance and legal advice to  DREAM 30.  Bennion  is related to the Mitt Romney family and even went so much to say in an oped how Mormons can teach immigrants.   David Bennion who is guiding these groups led by an Iranian and Fijian immigrant has been one of Obama’s most vocal critics regarding immigration, but was not as vocal against Mitt Romney’s self-deportation views and receiving advice from Kris Kobach(who is the legal architect behind many of these anti-immigrant laws).   We believe Bennion was not objective and as vocal against Mitt Romney because of family ties.   More importantly, David Bennion supports unreasonable open border views and he should not support chasing pipeline dreams knowing full well the Republican-led House of Representatives will not stand for this.

3)  Mohammad is quoted in news stories for wanting to bring back all 1.7 million undocumented deported immigrants.  This is unreasonable and Republicans will not stand for this.

4)  DreamActivist/NIYA’s efforts wasted more American tax payer dollars in our already bloated detention centers with their publicity stunts.

5) Dream 9 / DreamActivist and NIYA supporters have been working with A.N.S.W.E.R. who is listed in ADL’s top 10 anti-Israel groups and Mexican Americans have been repudiating that tie.

6) Leaders of DreamActivist are of Iranian or Fijian descent and they do not have any agency to speak on behalf of Mexican American voters.   Mexicans make up almost 70% of the entire Latino population pie and we take issue with Mohammad and Prerna who have tried to hijack the immigration rights movement that affects millions of Mexicans.

7)  Mohammd Abdollahi who has been much of the media face to Dream9 and Dream30 is from Michigan.  He does not live in a border state.  Prerna Lal is currently living in Washington D.C.

We sought the advice of nationally syndicated radio show host and political analysit via Carlos Galindo where he encouraged following the money and motives of the above forementioned pseudo immigration activist groups.

Below are reactions from Arizona immigration rights activists.

Angel Garcia, Arizona Immigration Rights Advocate:

The author (Mo) insinuates that the Honorable Mr. Gutierrez is unable to understand the struggles of an undocumented Mexican immigrant simply because he is an affluent Congressman, or maybe he is implying it is because he is Puerto Rican. Either way this is a failed argument and has no logic. What makes me laugh is the author of the article is himself not of Mexican descent. I find it funny the author fails to see the irony in attacking someone for ‘exploiting’ Mexicans when the author of this article is engaging in the same behaviors. How many non-Mexicans has NIYA or DREAM ACTIVIST asked to self-deport? I can understand why the author would support self-deportation, because I have on more than one occasion seen this author post anti-American sentiments. If you hate America so much then how about you self-deport and stop making money off the backs of the people who want nothing more to be a part of the ‘American Dream.’

Viva Ramirez, Chicano Activist / Former Arizona Voto Latino Director:

Comments released by Dreamactivist.org today re Congressman Luis Gutierrez  amount to little more than a flailing ideological tantrum through which they demonstrate once again that they possess only a vague, elementary understanding of the way this country works.  They proceed to alienate Gutierrez (and every other voting American in earshot) by saying he couldn’t understand them, and then they say he wasn’t their Champion anyway.

Lou Show, Founder of First Jewish Chicano Show in the Nation:

Mohammed Abdollahi is an embarrassment to the Undocumented community, advocating actions that give the community a black eye. No Right Leaning legislator (and there’s a lot of them) is going to be as convinced of the humanitarian argument to stop breaking families apart than by the economic argument of recognizing the Undocumented as a positive, tax-paying, human resource . . . so these tricks of convincing a Dreamer to leave the country and try to get back in is akin to asking someone to fall on their sword. Abdollahi is on record with the goal to prevent the passage of CIR and his organization’s actions are nothing less than irresponsible. I applaud Illinois Representative Guiterrez for distancing his office from NIYA and Community Disorganizer Mohammed Abdollahi.

Gail Mokry Shoultes, Arizona Immigration Rights Activist states:

I’m happy to learn that Rep. Luis Guiterrez has denounced the practices of DreamActivist. A man of his caliber shouldn’t fall for the amateurish stunts of people who’s agenda is to derail CIR.”

Richard Hornos, a South Carolina Immigration Rights Activist reacted and states:

I think he opened his eyes on time. I can see comments where people are surprised.”

Haime Badillo, a California Immigration rights Activist states:

I’m glad to see Rep. Gutierrez pay attention to people’s voices regarding the pseudo immigration activists.  Such good actions are reflected in a very positive way within the CIR movement.  The ideals should be focused in the good faith of the people and Justice.”

Thurman Williams, a Kansas supporter of Immigration Rights states:

It’s important that those who did the actual work to get immigration reform on the agenda more than a decade ago, reclaim it from those who would co-opt it for an agenda unrelated to the people who have lived and worked as model United States Citizens over those who advocate for predators of children to remain here.”

Mohammad does not have any agency to speak on behalf of the Mexican American community, and we take issue with him making a mockery out of President Obama and Democratic offices.  His agenda can be disastrous to the years of immigration reform we have all been working for.  More importantly, his leaders and cohorts have been telling reporters the Tea Party Republicans are not the real enemy to CIR efforts and we believe that is not true considering Senator Ted Cruz (Tea Party favorite) has not supported fixing the broken immigration system via the Gang of Eight CIR bill.  We also want to condemn the acts of Puerto Rican American Julio Varela, of Latino Rebels (now working with Al Jazeera) in what we perceive as his cheerleading with regard to the dastardly immigration deeds conducted by DreamActivist and NIYA when Mohammad wanted to “creatively and productively kill” CIR.
