Rep. King (R-IA) wants to keep criminal immigrants longer in the U.S. than DREAMers.
On June 6, 2013, U.S. Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) sponsored an amendment to the 2014 Department of Homeland Security spending bill, HR 2217, which defunds President Obama’s Executive Orders that allow ICE officials to focus their deportation efforts on undocumented convicted criminal immigrants instead of innocent documented noncriminal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as young children (DREAMERS). Apparently, Rep. King believes convicted criminal immigrants without legal status are less significant to get out of our country than innocent children that are now documented and have legal presence via DHS’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) process.
Seemingly, according to Rep. King’s amendment, documented ‘DREAMERS/DACA Recipients’ who were bought to our country as innocent young children, educated as aspiring U.S. Americans in our school systems, who are high school graduates and many, who are also college educated or college students, who have no criminal history, are far more essential to deport than undocumented convicted criminal immigrants. The documented DACA recipients with legal presence and no criminal record are condemned by King’s amendment and the convicted criminals without legal presence are now once again allowed a lower priority for deportation purposes according to King’s misguided line of thinking.
Yes, U.S. Rep. King, let’s deport legally presence innocent documented non-criminals immigrants (DREAMERS/DACA recipients) and keep the convicted criminal immigrants without documentation here in our country instead. Are you so blinded by your own bias that you cannot see the trees because of the forest? Rep. King, you need to be reminded that unless you are a Native American Indian, you, too, had a DREAMER in your family when your ancestors first immigrated to this country from another continent. Shame on you!
